Led Product and technical scoping for new product integration, internal and external; how we would use new API's and how new products would fit within our use cases
The Problem
Our goal was to improve our smart security system by incorporating and aligning new products with our existing use cases. This effort aimed to address a gap in our offering: ensuring our system met the industry standards and tablestake features expected by DIY security solutions. By exploring these integrations, we sought to match and exceed the capabilities of competing products, thereby growing and strengthening our user base
My Contributions
- Discovery - Conducted market analysis to identify key features prevalent in competitor solutions and requests from our own base
- Product Definition - Owned PRD, worked with Dev and design lead to product architecture docs and wireframes
- Technical Scoping - Worked with Dev lead to define technical requirements and test API functionality. Created an in office unit for testing
- Design - Conducted user testing with design for new user flows

ecobee is a smart home automation company specializing in innovative and energy-efficient solutions, including smart thermostats, cameras, and security systems, designed to optimize home comfort and energy usage while integrating seamlessly with various smart home ecosystems
Context
As part of the ecobee Smart Security team, we were committed to continuously improving our smart security system to keep up with the rapidly evolving market. Our goal was to ensure our product remained competitive and provided users with a integrated, holistic security solution
Problem
Our existing system lacked certain key features that were prevalent in competitor solutions, which limited our ability to attract and retain users according to our data. Without these features, we risked falling behind in a competitive DIY security market and missing out on potential growth opportunities
Opportunities
By integrating new products and APIs, we identified an opportunity to elevate our system to industry standards and beyond. These integrations would not only close the feature gap but also introduce functionalities that could attract new customers and enhance user satisfaction. As well the new integration would provide an entry point to users who already had the device install but did not yes have an ecobee security system. The addressable market was over 50x the current user count, refleecting a large area for growth
Action
I led the product and technical scoping for these new integrations, overseeing the process from discovery to design, and sometimes implementation. This involved, conducting comprehensive market analysis to identify essential features, creating a detailed PRFAQ and PRD for the external integration and working in partnership with other product teams to create a seamless user experience within our product offering
